I recently came across one of the bestselling textbooks offered by Wiley. As a text which is described as offering explanations for “both the underlying theory and the underlying mathematics, this text enables readers to fully grasp the fundamentals of physical and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater.” (Wiley, 2016)

It is also recommended for professional environmental engineers in search of a contemporary perspective on water and wastewater treatment processes so I believe that it would be a good fit for the Agency for a new text for the library. Also, due to its ability to provide problem sets and examples for students to figure out the mathematics behind the physical and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater, it would greatly be welcomed by our interns in the relevant field of water quality engineering.

Water Demand and Desalination

With the present restrictions placed on the public’s use of water hoses and power washers, in terms of watering their private gardens and washing their vehicles, there has been an outcry by many persons about increased water rates (although lower rates are subsidized for customers without meters, which can be noted in the State of the Water Resources Report, 2005, which also provides a listing of the various water tariffs), as well as, the fact that there is a desalination plant to provide additional water supply.

Having recently read an article in the Water Efficiency  Magazine entitled Parched: Can desalination quench the world’s thirst? by Laura Sanchez I immediately thought about such comments from the public.

This article highlighted the early history of desalination in the United States in 1970 and its possibility of solving a myriad of problems, as well as, pointed out various present issues with desalination such as its expense, the fact that it is energy-intensive and the argument of environmental impacts to marine resources and the large amounts of seawater being depleted.

Such points can lead to one really wondering how sustainable is the process of desalination. I would be curious to hear the pros/cons from employees since I know we have both environmentalists and water resources practitioners on board.

If you have ever been snorkeling in a tropical paradise and seen the psychedelic colors and teeming variety of otherworldly sea critters, you were gazing upon something increasingly rare: a healthy coral reef. That site also does a lot more than dazzle vacationers. Coral reefs occupy just 0.1 percent of the oceans’ bottom but provide habitat to a quarter of the world’s fish species. They also prevent erosion along coastlines and buffer the impact of storms, providing protection, food, and livelihoods for about 500 million people.

This issue presents information on a wide variety of topics, which would be of interest to water resources professionals, including watershed yields, stream bacteria, water resources protection and sediment trends to name a few.
